*********************************

Dear colleagues,

The World Health Organization’s (WHO) Antibiotic Awareness Week will take place on 13-19 November 2017. The theme of this year “Seek advice from a qualified healthcare professional before taking antibiotics” is to raise awareness of the need to preserve the power of antibiotics through appropriate use.

Antimicrobial resistance (AMR) is a global public health concern. The Department of Health is committed to combating AMR. This year on July 10, the Hong Kong Strategy and Action Plan on Antimicrobial Resistance (2017-2022) was launched to outline key areas, objectives and actions tailored to local needs to contain the growing threat of AMR in Hong Kong. In this context, we are pleased to announce launch of “Antibiotic Stewardship Programme in Primary Care” and the new fifth edition of “Interhospital Multi-disciplinary Programme on Antimicrobial ChemoTherapy (IMPACT)” which provide evidence-based antibiotic prescription guidelines for infections in primary care and in-hospital settings respectively. They serve as invaluable reference tools for medical and health professionals to guide appropriate clinical management of infectious diseases and thus reduce unnecessary prescriptions.

To tie in with the third World Antibiotic Awareness Week of the WHO, the Centre for Health Protection (CHP) has been coordinating a series of publicity campaigns and activities. Some of the activities are highlighted as below:

• Antibiotic Awareness Week 2017 cum Seminar on Antibiotic Stewardship Programme in Primary Care and Hospital Settings will be held on 13 November 2017 at the Lecture Theatre, G/F, CHP. Medical and healthcare professionals have been invited to share the overview of antibiotic stewardship programme in Hong Kong and discuss the way forward to further enhance the control measures for containment of AMR. Doctors and healthcare professionals in public and private sectors are welcome to join the event.

• Alongside, CHP would launch a mass media campaign to promulgate the importance of judicious use of antibiotics to the general public through diverse medium including broadcast of health messages in TV, radio, public transportation and social media.

• Since official launching in 2014, the “I pledge” campaign has been extended its coverage to include not just healthcare workers, but general public as well. Patients and their families are also welcome to sign up the pledge to show their support to the campaign. Relevant information can be accessed through: https://ipledge.chp.gov.hk

For details, please visit our CHP website. I should be grateful if you would disseminate the messages to your colleagues and encourage them to show their support to this meaningful initiative.

Best regards,

TY WONG
